Importance of originals

Not long after I started sewing, I realized that in order to really understand period construction I would have to study extant garments. Books gave me a start, but it wasn’t until I had collected a few bodices that I felt I had a good grasp of period techniques.

While pictures and words can’t give all the information that examining a bodice in person can, they can certainly help—especially when it comes to those nagging questions about what they would have done. With that in mind, when I study the bodices in my own collection I try to concentrate on the areas of construction that will be most useful in making recreations.
